Use Your Gift \\ Creative Worship Series
A Guest Story by Hannah Hayes
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. —Colossians 3:17
Imagine a cute little two-year-old sitting in the backseat singing at the top of her lungs. That was me, I’ve been singing since the moment I could speak. So when it comes to worship, singing and music are the first things that come to my mind. I have been singing in church since I was six and knew right away that my voice was a gift given to me to give back to God. However, worship comes in many shapes and sizes and can be expressed in a number of ways.
While singing is something that I still do today, God revealed to me a new talent during my time at college. I began painting and practicing calligraphy in my sophomore year. Not only had I found a great way to relieve some of that college-related stress, but I’d found a new passion. I quickly began to discover new ways to use my painting and calligraphy to bless others. I created cards, canvas paintings, and framed art as gifts of simple encouragement for friends and family. Soon people were paying me to do something I loved. I experienced a mixture of slight shock and gratitude. I was honored that someone found my art worthy of compensation, and shocked because I’ve always been a hard on myself by thinking “I am not really that good!” God was quick to remind me that He gave me another beautiful gift to be used for His glory.
I’ve been able to use my painting classes as a way to minister and to invite people to church. One special girl took me up on that offer and while at church renewed her relationship with Jesus Christ! I have also been able to use my calligraphy by creating encouraging posts on social media with blessed results. Usually, I design a piece of art that coincides with something I’ve been studying or needing in my own life. The amazing responses of people that needed those exact words at the same time is wonderfully surprising. Seeing the way that God works through me has blessed and humbled me greatly and I am more thankful than ever to be used by Him, to bring glory to Him.
Each person has been blessed with a talent or gift that can be used to further the Kingdom. From public speaking to writing to painting, from car repairing to cooking; the gifts are endless. God is behind every talent and skill that we have. We are meant to be stewards of those gifts and use them to honor Him. One of the most rewarding opportunities to utilize our talents is by sharing it with others, for we are blessed to be a blessing. True worship is a way of life, not a single action but a lifestyle. I encourage you to take the talent that God has given you and turn it into worship.
